Quilt of Togetherness

An interactive sound installation exploring the voices that make up a community.

Quilt of Togetherness is an interactive project created as part of a studio course in interaction design, in collaboration with students from the Department of Culture, Creation, and Production at Sapir College. The project explores the concept of community by asking: what does “togetherness” sound like?

The voices featured in the installation were recorded by Sapir students from communities in the Gaza border region (עוטף עזה), capturing a wide range of emotional experiences, personal reflections, and communal sentiments in the aftermath of October 7th.

These voices were woven into a large interactive quilt made of rectangular patches in yellow and purple nonwoven fabric, hung vertically on a wall. Each element responds to touch with a unique sound: yellow elements play questions like “How are you?”, while purple elements respond with personal answers and ambient tones.

Users can touch multiple elements at once, layering different voices and creating evolving sound compositions. This playful interaction invites users to “play” the quilt—experiencing the sound of togetherness, shaped by the textures and rhythms of real human voices. The size and layout encourage group participation and exploration.
