Seeing Their Voices
An interactive sound-color experience responding to October 7th through synesthetic painting.
This project was developed as part of a collaboration with Sapir College, focusing on sounds recorded in the Gaza border region following the events of October 7th. The sounds were provided by Sapir students, and this project offered them an interactive, visual expression.
This interaction explores the relationship between sound and color. The installation features three illustrations in the form of postcards, each accompanied by a layered soundscape. Viewers wear headphones, select an illustration, and begin to color with different colored markers. Each color represents a different layer of sound, and the proportions of each color influence the strength of the layers.
Painting is a familiar and intuitive act, accessible to both children and adults. Here, the act of painting is enriched with a sensory layer of sound, resulting in a unique sound image. This audio feedback, in turn, influences the user’s color choices in unexpected ways—disrupting conventional decision-making patterns and inviting deeper emotional reflection.
